Lightscape returns to Chicago Botanic Garden with all-new holiday magic for 2025

A 1.3-mile trail of twinkling lights and new installations transforms the Chicago Botanic Garden into a winter wonderland for families this holiday season.

Families can once again step into a glowing wonderland when Lightscape returns to the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe on Thursday, Nov. 14. The popular holiday tradition runs nightly through Jan. 4, 2026, transforming the garden into a mile-long trail of shimmering lights and seasonal magic.

The event features a 1.3-mile trail winding through the 385-acre grounds of the garden where dazzling new light installations are on display this year. As you walk, you and your family will pass through shimmering arches, illuminated trees, glowing pathways and fire-lit cauldrons for marshmallow toasting.

Parents appreciate that the experience is outdoors, so dressing warmly and bringing layers helps everyone stay comfortable on cooler nights. Kids often delight in the visual spectacle and the chance to pause for a snack or hot chocolate along the way.

Timing, tickets and practical info

The event runs nightly from late afternoon until evening, with entries beginning around 4:30 p.m. and the last entry slot typically around 8:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance, along with parking if you arrive by car. There are separate fees for non-members. Members always park free; non-members who purchase advance parking can enter via the member lane, according to the Chicago Botanic Garden.

One visitor noted, “Prepaid parking is a must.” They shared that buying both Lightscape tickets and parking ahead of time saved a few dollars and made arrival much smoother. “As a member, when I got there, there were two lines for parking. Members and non-members. The non-members line was packed. The members line was empty, so I just drove up, showed my ticket on my phone and drove on in. Remember where you parked, the first time there at night can get tricky.”

Because the trail is timed in 15-minute increments to reduce crowding, the garden recommends arriving close to your scheduled entry time.

Why this year is special

For the 2025-26 season, a major portion of the installations are brand-new — meaning even families who’ve attended before will likely see something different this time, according to the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Tips to make the most of your visit

Since you’re planning a family outing, keep in mind that the path is paved or crushed gravel, so a stroller is possible but consider footwear suited for an evening walk. It can take about 45-75 minutes depending on how often you stop.

If you have younger children, planning an early entry time may help avoid later crowds and allow you more flexibility. Also, stopping for a warm drink or snack mid-trail can provide a natural break and keep everyone comfortable.

A memorable holiday tradition

Walking through the lit-up gardens, you’ll find you’re not just seeing decorative lights but experiencing an immersive environment — sounds, reflections, fire cauldrons and changing colors all combine to create a multi-sensory outing. As one writer put it, “Lightscape really lifts the spirits on what would normally be a cold, winter evening,” according to A Little Time and a Keyboard.
