Go fly a kite

This spring take full advantage of this city’s famous wind at the 14th annual Chicago’s Kids and Kites Festival. Grab those kites your family has been unable to use all winter and head to Cricket Hill near Montrose Harbor in Lincoln Park for a day of family fun.

Not sure where you stored the kids’ kites? No worries. Free paper kite kits will be available at the festival, giving your child the chance to make, decorate and fly their own one-of-a-kind kites. It’s a great opportunity to illustrate how a simple paper bag can become aerodynamic when shaped the right way. Kites will also be available for purchase at the on-site kite store.

“After what can often be a long winter, it’s nice to have a fun, free activity that is outdoors, (and) that brings all kinds of people together and all generations,” says spokesperson Cindy Gatziolis. “It’s free, it’s fun and it’s something everyone can do.”

Once you have a kite, professional kite flyers will help with techniques and tips. The professionals will also fly large-scale kites sure to impress young and old.

If the wind dies down, take a break from kite flying and explore all of the other family-focused entertainment available. In the past, entertainment has included roving entertainers, a craft tent and face painting. Food will be provided by Robinson’s Ribs and available for purchase near the festivities.

Chicago’s Kids and Kites Festival will take place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 19.
