Goodman Theatre’s Play n’ 90′ brings the joy of creating to Chicago’s smallest patrons

The scenario: Your kid always wants to create plays, and uses everything from bed sheets to the family cat to make those theatrical dreams a (yowling) reality.

The problem: You’re not sure how many more viewings of “Elsa meets the Jedis” you have in your soul, and the cat is threatening to exit stage left–permanently.

The solution: You remember that you live in Chicago, home to world-class productions and famed establishments like The Goodman–Chicago’s oldest and largest not-for-profit theater–and they’re pretty marvelous at creating programs like this fall’s “Play ‘n 90” for theatrically minded 5-12 year olds.

Why is it so fantastic? Oh, let me count the ways:

1

Twice a month, kids can work with four professional theater artists at the Goodman’s Alice Rapoport Center for Education and Engagement to brainstorm a plot, setting and characters. They go on to create the set and costumes, and work with these artists to develop the story through fun exercises. (Theater-lovers of a slightly older age might recognize these opportunities as “master classes,” and attempt to adjust their birth dates accordingly.)

2

Parents and grandparents (plus other adults who have strong feelings for a performance-happy kid) are welcomed to join in, witness the theatrical greatness in front of an actual audience and then proudly wear their Best Grownup Ever hats for the rest of the weekend.

3

Tickets to these 90-minute workshops? $5 for the adults, but kids 5-12 are entirely, one hundred percent free of charge.

Reserve your tickets here for one of these arts-enriching, family-engaging Saturday experiences–and give the cat a welcomed day off.
