If you’re looking for a fun family-friendly show to see this holiday season, then stop the presses. Marriott Theatre’s “Newsies” brings a whole new level of high energy introduced by the Tony award-winning Broadway phenomenon years ago.
The Disney musical, based on the 1992 movie of the same name, tells an inspiring story about the real-life “Newsboy Strike of 1899.” Orphan Jack Kelly and his group of “newsies” go on strike to challenge publishing titan Joseph Pulitzer’s new rise of production prices at the boys’ expense. Not only is this musical an incredible history lesson about child labor practices during the Progressive Era, but you’ll feel this generation’s passion as the talented young cast sings vibrant songs like “The World Will Know,” “Seize the Day” and “King of New York.”
Marriott Theatre continues to amaze its audiences on how less is more with their small venue. You would assume an energetic musical like “Newsies” needs a lot of space—especially when the original production won a Tony Award for “Best Choreography” in 2012. The cast doesn’t miss a beat as they perform numerous flips, back handsprings and pirouettes throughout the show. Not to mention, your entire family will get an up-close view of all the incredible action (no nosebleed section here!)
Recommended for ages 9 and up, treat your tweens and teens before the year ends to a musical that will warm up any loving family’s heart. It’s a Disney musical classic and Marriott Theatre’s production won’t fail on making you hum the songs on your drive home.
