Chicago travels: Adventures at Volo Auto Museum

This winter has been brutal, and although it may be easier to stay at home where it’s warm and toasty, we sometimes we need to force ourselves out of the house. The Chicagoland area boasts tons on indoor places, but this particularly weekend we were interested in doing something a bit different. We discovered a hidden gem up north in Volo, Illinois – The Volo Auto Museum.

With antique cars galore and cars from movies, The Volo Auto Museum is an obvious choice for a fun excursion for car lovers! But even if you can’t tell the difference between a piston or a cylinder, you don’t have to be a car fanatic to enjoy this museum. There’s something for everyone! Here are a few highlights from our visit:

Tons and tons of cars – some even for sale. It took a lot of restraint for my husband not to walk out with a car! If you are in the market for a classic car, this is the place to go!

Movie lovers will enjoy seeing cars from popular movies and shows such as “Batman,” “The Terminator,” “Dick Tracey,” Knight Rider” and “The Dukes of Hazzard.” My husband just about went crazy when he saw the Deloreon from his favorite movie, “Back to the Future.”

Kids will love the kids section where you can actually step inside the car from “The Flintstones” and take a fun picture. You can take in a few kiddie rides for a couple of quarters.

My kids had a fun time looking at scenes/cars from kiddie shows/movies such as “The Cat in the Hat,” “Looney Tunes,” “Dumbo” and of course “Cars!”

If you love finding a good deal, don’t miss out on the Volo Antique Mall where treasures are waiting to be discovered!

Getting hungry? Stop by their cute 50s diner.

Or if you don’t mind venturing a few minutes away, there is a great German deli, Koenemann’s Sausage Company, where we could not only pick our favorite meats and sausages, but make our own sandwiches. Can’t go wrong with huge subs for a great price!
