We couldn’t agree more with Mr. Schulz’s words and find that they ring particularly true this time of year as we head toward Valentine’s Day. Make some sweet memories and enjoy tasty treats at these fun, family-friendly chocolate events taking place in the Chicago suburbs.
Cocoa Crawl
When: Feb. 1, Noon-4 p.m.
Where: 308 Old McHenry Road, Long Grove
Admission: Free
Two dozen merchants will be offering samples of cocoa-inspired treats throughout downtown Long Grove. Traditionalists will appreciate the hot chocolate fudge and the more adventurous will love the chocolate balsamic fudge cookies. Begin at the Visitor’s Center where you can pick up a map and list of participating businesses and, when you’re done, enter to win prizes.
Chocolate Weekend
When: Feb. 8-9, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where: Morton Arboretum, 4100 IL Route 53, Lisle
Admission: Free with regular Arboretum admission.
Without the cocoa tree, we wouldn’t have chocolate, so the Morton Arboretum is a great place to explore chocolate’s connection to the natural world. Sample an array of specialty chocolates, unique treats and items with a chocolate twist from a variety of vendors.
Chocolate Walk
When: Feb. 8, Noon-5 p.m.
Where: Downtown Naperville
Admission: $31
Chocolate is good. Chocolate to benefit a great cause is even better. Proceeds from this event go to 360 Youth Services. Each participant receives a cute chocolate tin that it is used for collecting a taste treat from shops throughout downtown Naperville.
Chocolate Fest
When: Feb. 22, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Where: Homewood-Flossmoor Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road, Homewood
Admission: Free
The Village of Homewood will be celebrating all things chocolate at their Chocolate Fest. There will be activities for kids as well as science and baking demonstrations and a wide array of chocolatey items. The Chocolate Bake-Off Contest will feature professional and amateur bakers competing for title of “Home Sweet Homewood’s Master Pastry Chef.”
Long Grove Confectionary Company Chocolate Factory Tour
When: Monday through Saturday
Where: 333 Lexington Drive, Buffalo Grove
Admission: $2
If you can’t make the event, consider taking a chocolate tour at the Long Grove Confectionary Company. They are offered Monday through Saturday and include a video presentation and a view of production that all can see whether you’re small or tall. The $2 admission fee includes a treat. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 847-459-3875.
