Sweet spots in Lake County to celebrate school success

School is back in session and we are all getting back into the swing of homework, tests and studying. Want to keep kids encouraged? Why not celebrate their work with a sweet treat? These Lake County spots are perfect to celebrate that first spelling test or making the team.

Cacao Sweets and Treats

122 Center St., Grayslake

This all-natural, made-from-from scratch bakery features decadent cakes and homemade candy bars. Every day you’ll find something different in the case and cookie jars, but go early because they frequently sell out.

The Heart of Europe Cafe

113 S. Cook St., Barrington

This bakery is like none other. They create amazing chimney cakes! (Think of it like a tall stacked donut.) They also fill them with ice cream and sprinkles.

The Chocolate Sanctuary

5101 Washington St., Gurnee

Chocolate is in the name so you know exactly what they specialize in. Aside from amazing handmade chocolates, they host a Sunday brunch that is worth getting up early for. My children are partial to the waffle sticks made with bacon in the center and their choice of toppings include whipped cream and sprinkles.

Deerfield’s Bakery

201 N. Buffalo Grove Rd., Buffalo Grove

Known for it’s amazing custom cakes, it’s also the perfect place to pick up a fancy cupcake. Our favorite is the Dreamsicle, topped with a candied orange.

Whisk Bakery and Coffee Shop

216 S. Main St., Wauconda

This adorable cafe in the heart of Wauconda is the perfect stop for a celebratory cupcake or a fun cookie made to look like a butterfly. Bright and welcoming, this cake shop is always full of friendly faces.

Uniquely Sweet

888 E. Belvidere Rd. Suite 106, Grayslake

Sometimes nothing but chocolate will do. Uniquely Sweet specializes in hand-dipped chocolate creations from strawberries to crispy treats. You can also get anything customized for a holiday or special person.
