They say summer bodies are made in the winter. Given I just had my second baby five months ago, I’ve been busy recovering, so you could say I’m a bit behind the eight ball in my bikini body quest. I realize I’m a work in progress so I’ll take advantage of a workout whenever I can get one. Walking lunges down the aisle at Sam’s Club, anyone? I’m only half kidding.
As a busy mom, trying to find the time to get in a good workout is half the battle. And now that the weather has officially peaked above the dismal temps, you may be looking to think outside the (gym) box. If you’re in the same boat as me or looking to change up your scenery, the city offers some awesome options with a drool-worthy view.
I’ll be doing a series over the next few weeks sharing some of the best places for yoga, boot camps and other types of fitness classes around the city. So, stay tuned … this week is dedicated to my yogis.
Yoga Social Summer Series on the River
2 N Riverside Plaza, Chicago 60606
Cool location. Check. Charitable event. Check. Killer workout. Check. VibeUP presents this social movement happy hour along the Chicago River starting on June 1 until September 7. For $20 (cash only accepted at time of the event), this gets you in to meet other like-minded yogis in pursuit of zen + happy hour + a mindful market of local and artisan crafts and products. You’ll feel even better knowing your Andrew Jackson went to charity. Reserve your spot now!
Babes who brunch (and do yoga)
1224 W Webster Ave, Chicago 60614
Do you like to multitask when you get a break from your kiddos? Yeah, me too! (Especially if it involves a mimosa (or two). Yoga Six is offering a special event at Derby Bar called Breathe + Brunch. Class starts at 9 a.m. and brunch is immediately after. Tickets are $20 and includes yoga class, your choice of a brunch item and a mimosa or bloody mary. Get details here for the June 11 event.
Get your beach on
1600 N Lake Shore Dr, Chicago 60613 (North Avenue Beach)
When you think of beach yoga, Chicago probably doesn’t come to mind. However, Sun and Moon Beach Yoga considers North Avenue Beach their zen home. Try out a free class on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. They offer practice seven days a week at a variety of times. Classes start on May 27, but check their schedule and pricing for further information.
Lions, tigers and yogis … oh my!
2001 N Clark St, Chicago 60614 (Lincoln Park Zoo – Nature Boardwalk Peoples Gas Pavilion)
Given that many yoga poses imitate animal names (downward dog, cobra, crow), it’s fitting that Lincoln Park Zoo is offering this “one with nature” experience. Presented by Walgreens, yoga in the zoo starts on June 1 and runs through September 18. Take in the breathtaking views of the city and center your mind and body. There are two different types of classes: adult-only on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 9 am. and 10:30 a.m. and toddler-friendly on Thursday at 10 a.m. Drop in rates are $20. For more information on pricing check out their website.
While summer typically creates a constant “on-the-go” mentality, these options may help you stay a wee more grounded. Namaste and don’t forget your yoga mat for any of the aforementioned.
