In my unending, albeit semi-closeted, adoration for strip malls (part I and part II), I’d be remiss to leave out the one I visit almost daily: Meadow Shopping Plaza on the southeast corner of Meadow Road and Cherry Lane in Northbrook. The most obvious draw for me is my friendly neighborhood Starbucks. But I’ve happily learned that a few local gems make their home here, too.
Just after moving to Northbrook from San Francisco a year ago, I stopped into Turn the Tables for what I figured would be 10 minutes. An hour later, I emerged with many a-treasure in hand. Turn the Tables carries upscale consignment furniture and home decor, from bar stools to bookcases, dresses to desks. Through an in-house studio, the skilled staff can also revitalize chairs, sofas and tables with decorative painting, wallpapering and architectural embellishments.
If your motto is “go knit or go home,” Three Bags Full is your jam. With a plentiful selection of yarns, notions and patterns, this full-service studio is designed for beginners and advanced knitters alike. Take a class to learn a new skill or to complete a project as a group, or sign up for private lessons. Kids can also get in on the action with parent/child knitting on Saturday afternoons and knitting camps throughout the summer.
Leonard’s Mens & Boys
In the sea of mass-market retail and online commerce, finding a classic, old-fashioned shop for boys of all ages is a welcome throwback. From chinos to sweaters to local school sports gear, Leonard’s is a refreshingly simple place to shop.
