8 St. Patrick’s Day Events for Chicago Kids

Wondering what to do for St. Patrick’s Day with kids? While we’ll miss the green parades this year, there’s so much more shamrockin’ fun you can have with the entire family. In-Person Events

Oak Forest Fleadh

March 6, 2021

In 2021, the parade will step off from Oak Forest High School heading south to Oak Forest Park District. The 5K that traditionally precedes the parade will be held virtually and Leprechaun activities, including crafts and other surprises, will be at the Oak Forest Park District from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Lucky Leprechaun Hunt

March 13, 2021

Beginning March 13, families can track down the Leprechaun spotted in the woods at Red Oak, go seek his pot of gold. Purchase the digital clues and a small prize will be the reward for the lucky finders of this sneaky forest friend. Adults don’t need to register, but must accompany registrants. An email with a link to the clues will be emailed after 3 p.m. on March 13.

Leprechaun Carnival

March 20, 2021

Kids ages 3-10 can enjoy the luckiest carnival around for a chance to win fun prizes. Children will play the games at their own pace and receive a prize after completing all games. Registration is required for one of two one-hour sessions.

Virtual Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade

March 13, 2021

  • Hosted by: Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade
  • Cost: Free

This parade that typically features more than 200 floats and marching bands is switching to a virtual format in 2021 with “Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Parade.” Check the event’s website for information about how to view the parade and the dying of the Chicago River.

St. Patrick’s Day Craft

March 14, 2021

  • Hosted by: Kilbourn Park
  • Cost: $5, registration required

Kids ages 6-13 can learn to create a cool St. Patrick’s Day themed craft. Pickup supplies at Kilbourn Park in Chicago.

Virtual St. Patrick’s Day Craft

March 16, 2021

  • Hosted by: Brands Park
  • Cost: $5, registration required

Kids ages 3-6 are encouraged to get crafty and make something cute for St. Patrick’s Day. Registration is required and supplies can be picked up from Brands Park before the event.

Virtual St. Patrick’s Cookie Decorating Class

March 16, 2021

  • Hosted by: Sugar Bliss Cake Boutique
  • Cost: $70, call for registration

Kids ages 5 to teens can learn to decorate cookies to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Cookie kits will be mailed in advance of the class, sponsored by Sugar Bliss Cake Boutique. Call to book a class, and kits can be mailed nationwide if families would like to participate together.

St. Pat’s Charming Snakes

March 17, 2021

  • Hosted by: Forest Preserve District of Will County
  • Cost: $5, registration required 

The legend is that St. Patrick charmed the snakes out of Ireland. Lucky for us, there are plenty of charming snakes here in Illinois. Kids ages 8 and older can learn about local snakes, ranging from big northern water snakes to colorful smooth green snakes to small midland brown snakes.

Wednesday Citywide Story Time

March 17, 2021

  • Hosted By: Chicago Public Library
  • Cost: Free

Join the Chicago Public Library on Wednesday afternoons in March for a story time series for the whole family featuring librarians from all over the city. Enjoy songs, rhymes and books, plus suggestions for at-home activities. The March 17 event’s theme is St. Patrick’s Day.
