Chicago mom: How single parents can enjoy Valentine’s Day

There’s a misperception that single people hate Valentine’s Day. I understand there are people who think it’s simply a Hallmark holiday and has no real value in their lives. I get that and respect that. However, I am a hopeless romantic who enjoys Valentine’s Day. I think single moms who aren’t in relationships may feel some kind of way because there’s no one to pamper them. As our children get older they may make a craft in daycare or school that will melt our heart every time. Other than that we are on our own and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Here are 5 ways that you can take care of yourself on this day of love.

1. Go to a spa

Solo parenting is hard work and one thing many of us neglect is our own self care. Why not schedule time to have someone massage your shoulders, paint your nails or give yourself a facial. If it’s not in your budget, head to your local Target or Walmart and purchase some supplies to create your own spa at home with scented candles.

2. Eat a meal at a restaurant without your child(ren)

A few weekends ago I went to this amazing Hibachi grill in the city with some friends. As much as I love being around my son, there is nothing like dining out with adults. I have made it high on my priority list to make that happen more this year. You should too!

3. Perform random acts of kindness

It’s easy to feel sad or lonely on Valentine’s Day so why not spread joy instead? I love these suggestions from Smashed Peas and Carrots. I’m going to buy Valentine’s Day cards and send them to friends and family.

4. Cross something off your bucket list

I don’t know about you, but my bucket list is getting longer every year. This is the perfect day to do something you’ve always wanted to do.

5. Buy flowers

There are some people that think buying flowers for yourself is weird. Not buying flowers for yourself is weird. I’m not talking about the prepackaged flowers you can find at the grocery store. I encourage every single mom to create her own bouquet and even visit a florist for suggestions for a beautiful selection. If it’s in your budget, I would make this a weekly or monthly habit.
