Chicago mom: How to parent when you are sick

We all want to focus 100 percent on our children, but there are days when that is impossible. This winter it seems everyone has gotten sick at least once. Moms don’t get to take sick days, so here are some ways to parent when you feel terrible.

Movie day. Instead of just throwing on the television, find some old classics from your childhood. My favorites are “Ferris Buellers Day Off,” “Back to the Future” and “Home Alone.” Another idea is to watch the “Star Wars” series – that will keep everyone occupied for many hours.

Play doctor. Explain to your kids that your head (or insert in ailing body part) is hurting and ask them to find all the doctor and medical toys that they can find and allow them to check you while you lie comfortably in bed.

Scavenger hunt. Make a list of specific toys and obscure (safe) objects around your home and send your kids off to search for them. Close your eyes while you wait.

Books on tape. When you don’t have the energy to read to your little ones, let them listen to a book on tape (or CD) and allow them to follow along with the voice. They will feel proud of their independence.

Hide and Seek. I hide in the bathtub every time and take a little nap and for some reason my children never remember to look there.

Ask for help. Send a text to a neighbor, friend or family member telling them you are not feeling well. I bet you will be surprised by most people’s automatic response to take your kids, which will give you the rest you need.

We all get sick and need to rest our bodies. It is important that we heal so that we can be the best moms we can be.
