After a long and cold winter, the sun has finally started to come out. The snow has started to melt, and the birds are chirping. Spring is finally upon us, and that can only mean one thing – race season has started.
The weather is finally nice enough to run outside without winter gear, so it’s the best time to pick a fun race to run.
I ran the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K for the first time last year, and it was by far my favorite race that I’ve ever run, and I’ve run quite a few races.
The crowd and energy are just amazing. The race takes place in downtown Chicago, and it’s so much fun running through the streets of the city with the other runners, spectators and bands.
What I really love about this race is that it’s a great way to get the whole family active because it’s so kid friendly. The minimum age for the Shamrock Shuffle is 8, and in 2014, 900 youth ranging from age 8 to 19 finished in the 2014 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle.
“The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle has become a strong family tradition for many of our runners, and we love seeing families getting out together after a long winter and participate in an activity together,” race director Carey Pinkowski says. “It’s a festive race, and if you make the Shamrock Shuffle the first running event your kids experience, they will remember it for a very long time.”
There is still time to register for the 2015 Shamrock Shuffle on their website, and this year there is a finisher’s medal, which doubles as a bottle opener. What kid wouldn’t love their very own medal?
So, put away those winter boots, grab your running shoes and your kids, and get your race on.
