Get ready to Read for the Record with a fun kids’ craft

Join hundreds of thousands of young readers and their families across the country in support of literacy and early childhood education by participating in the 8th Annual Read for the Record. This year the Read for the Record book is Otis by Loren Long.

Otis is a timeless story of friendship that blossoms on a farm between a lovable tractor and a calf.

Since children love doing crafts, I thought I’d share a fun foot art craft to go along with the book. This craft is best suited for kids ages 2-8.

Tractor foot art craft for kids

Get your surface ready by spreading out newspaper to protect your floor. You will want to have wet wipes nearby to clean up your child’s foot before they have a chance to take off running.

Paint your child’s foot so that one-third is red and two-thirds is white. I like using acrylic paint because it covers better. Have them place their foot on a piece of construction paper. Press gently and then lift foot straight up. Allow paper to dry.

Using green acrylic paint and a sponge, have your child add some grass at the bottom of your Otis footprint. Then use white acrylic paint to make a couple of puffy clouds in the sky.

Finally, glue on some black tires with white construction paper rims to the bottom of your footprint. Add an eye, mouth, and steering wheel with a black marker.

Now you have an “Otis” craft to remind your child of both the book and the fun day!

Read for the Record will take place on Oct. 3. Check with your local library for start times for this event.
