From the time I learned to read I’ve always loved books. As a kid I read constantly. After bedtime I’d often get caught with my bedside lamp on while I read long after I was supposed to be asleep. Books are a major part of my life and it’s hard for me to list all of my favorite books because there are so many.
But the one that is my favorite of all time is “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss.
I didn’t need to buy a copy when we found out we were having our first baby because I already owned it. I’ve given it as a graduation gift, read it on a bad day and it’s a regular choice for my kids at storytime. I even convinced my husband to paint an “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” mural on our childrens’ nursery wall.
I was working as a lawyer for kids in the DCFS system when I realized why “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” is so amazing. I needed a gift I could give to my teenage clients on their birthdays or graduations. Many of my clients had low reading levels or learning disabilities so I needed something that was easy to read, but age appropriate. I also needed a book that didn’t stress the importance of family since many of my clients did not have family they could rely on. “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” fit all my requirements and my clients loved it.
It’s written for everyone; all ages, all education levels, all family situations and backgrounds.
“You’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street.”
Life is about making choices and you can often tell which choices are not the best ones.
“Bang-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you.”
You won’t always be the best and bad things will happen to you because they happen to everyone.
“But on you will go though the weather be foul.”
Despite difficulties, you can persevere.
“… though your arms may get sore and your sneakers may leak.”
It won’t be pleasant, but you can do it.
There will be waiting and loneliness.
Whether you’re an adult professional, a confused teenager, an often over-worked mom or a preschooler being read to by your parents you’ve probably experienced everything Dr. Seuss writes about.
And in the end – “KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS.”
