5 kid-centric salons that make haircut time fun

“I can’t wait to get my haircut,” said no kid, ever. Luckily, Chicagoland offers a number of salons that uniquely cater to kids, making the task a little more stress-free and bearable for parents.

KidSnips

Kids can hop aboard car-shaped chairs like a police car, taxi cab and fire engine, and choose a movie from an extensive DVD collection to keep them distracted. When their service is complete, each client can choose a prize from the treasure chest and leave with a balloon. As an added bonus, the venue also offers a wide selection of hard-to-find vintage toys that will take parents for a spin down memory lane, like weaving loom sets and magic grow capsules for the tub.

Lilies and Spikes

Little girls will especially love this salon, where every haircut is finished with a braid and hair glitter. They’ll also go crazy for some awesome add-ons, including feather extensions, diamond bling strands and color chalk strands. As if this place wasn’t cool enough, kids can also select their favorite shows on Netflix to watch during their service.

Pickles Playroom & Salon

How many times have you bribed your child to get a haircut? If you are not above that, use this for ammo: every haircut comes with a one-hour play pass where littles up to age seven can slide, climb and dabble in a mini grocery store. Pickles is also on trend, offering hair chalking color streaks as an add-on service.

2315 W. Lawrence Ave., Chicago

Pigtails & Crewcuts

This salon tries to take the scaries out of haircuts by making kids feel at home. Children are treated to animal crackers and a movie of their choice as they climb aboard a cool vehicle chair. Bored siblings can also play with an awesome wooden train table while they wait.

2660 Navy Blvd., Glenview

Rock Hair Scissors

This colorful shop, complete with murals, games, puzzles and a giant magnet board will keep the tears at bay, literally. The shop uses its own fruit-scented tearless shampoo, which is a favorite among kids and their parents. Children can munch on goldfish and pop in a movie of their choice before leaving with a fresh trim and lollipop.
