How to bring Hawaii to Chicago’s suburbs

If you have dreams of going to Hawaii, but a trip out to the islands isn’t possible, do the next best thing: bring the islands to you! Check out these fun Chicago suburban spots where you can get your aloha on with your ohana!

The Tiki Terrace

1591 Lee St., Des Plaines

If you’re looking for the ultimate tropical getaway, Tiki Terrace is your ticket to island fun. Enjoy Hawaiian style food such as the addicting taro chips with pineapple salsa along with hand rolled Bora Bora egg rolls. My kids also devoured the Kalua pork! Next time, we’ll have to try the haupia coconut cake which is supposed to be really good. Oh, and who can forget about the delicious tropical drinks, including the award-winning mai tai?

After dinner, chill out and enjoy the luau show that describes the Polynesian culture through story and dance. Don’t forget to let them know if you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary or any special occasion. Celebrants will be invited to participate on stage.

Check out what we thought about our experience.

Broken Oar

614 Rawson Bridge Rd., Port Barrington

Every Wednesday until Labor Day get transported to the islands of Hawaii at Broken Oar in Port Barrington. The ideal location by the Fox river hosts a Luau Wednesday Sunset Party with awesome live Hawaiian music, luau dancing and even fire dancers. And yes, it’s totally kid-friendly! In fact, kids get invited up to the stage to learn how to hula. Such a great time for the entire family!

Aloha Falls Golf & Games

1800 N US Highway 45, Libertyville

Love mini golf and old school video games? Then you’ll love checking out Aloha Falls, a Hawaiian-themed mini golf course. Choose from a 9-hole course, 18-hole course or go for all 27 holes. When you’re done, stay to play your favorite old school video games such as Donkey Kong, Super Mario, Contra on Super SNES, Nintendo and Sega Genesis. While the kids were off playing video games, my husband and I were able to sneak in a few billiard games. Fun times!
