As the federal government shutdown continues, Chicago families, especially furloughed workers and those depending on SNAP benefits, are feeling its impact.
Chicago Parent has compiled a list of local resources for families needing food support, as well as volunteer opportunities for those who want to help their neighbors during this time.
According to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, 1 in 5 households with children in Cook County experiences food insecurity. With uncertainty around paychecks and federal nutrition programs, food banks and community nonprofits are preparing for increased demand in the weeks ahead.
Below are organizations offering free food, donation drop-offs and volunteer shifts across Chicago.
Emergency school and senior meal programs
Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services offer meals to ensure kids and seniors stay nourished during service interruptions.
