A roundup of eco-themed events across Chicagoland to celebrate the planet in style. From an Arbor Day celebration from Chicagoland’s leading tree folks to a 5K run/walk for the whole family, there are plenty of places to go green this Earth Day.

Party for the Planet

Environmentally friendly organizations and businesses will be on-site to educate about how little actions can make a big difference in our community. Visit with Cosley Zoo animals and be part of the largest combined Earth Day celebration in North America along with visitors to over 100 other AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums.

Celebrate Earth Day at Lake Katherine and enjoy a fun-filledafternoon of games and activities for the whole family, including ashrub giveaway, dog agility and fly ball demonstrations, children’spetting zoo, tree planting (at 1 p.m.), Tai Chi mini-classes,children’s crafts and hayrides.


Head down to Village Green in Northbrook for a day of eco-themedevents, starting with a community clean-up and finishing withearth-friendly exhibits and live entertainment.



At the Lincoln Park Zoo, where admission is always free, stop byfor special animal encounters on Earth Day weekend, April 23-24,every hour, on the hour, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Start your day withbig cats hunting piñatas shaped like deer and zebra and stuffedwith meaty treats. Then watch one of the zoo’s birds of prey swoopdown on a fake snake, and learn a thing or two about recycling fromgorillas. Be sure to pick up a Seed Surprise packet at NatureBoardwalk at the zoo’s south end – with all the rain still to comethis month, you’ll wake up in May to a beautiful bouquet.
