Kids learn coding at new suburban tech lab

Who knew that you don’t have to be an adult to know how to code? Recently, I stepped foot in Wilmette’s Digital Adventures and was immediately impressed with this first-of-its-kind company.

Digital Adventures is an interactive after school program that caters to children in first through eighth grade who want to learn more about the newest technologies. Experienced instructors (also known as Digital Guides) teach courses which include coding, robotics, Minecraft, video game design and more. After rifling through recent Yelp reviews, one of the constants was how wonderful and engaging each of the instructors were.

The emphasis at Digital Adventures is on creativity or, as co-owner Omowale Casselle explained to me, “… is to inspire kids to develop innovative solutions to the world’s biggest problems using technology as their platform.”

“We show kids how to be creators, not just consumers of digital technologies,” he says. “[We] teach kids how to become better problem solvers, and prepare kids for an increasingly technology-enabled job market.” In addition to the after school program, Digital Adventures hosts workshops, camps and birthday parties.

If you’re near the north suburbs or even if you live a bit further away, it’s still worth a trip to check out Digital Adventures or schedule a private lesson. An added bonus: if you have a younger child who you need to entertain, the popular play space, Growth Spurts, is located right next door.

Look for a second Digital Adventures location in Oak Park opening Spring 2016.
