Every summer, crowds flock to the lakefront to see vintage and modern aircraft fly over Lake Michigan in the annual Chicago Air and Water Show

Established in 1959, the Chicago Air and Water Show is one of the largest free admission events of its kind. This will be the show’s 64th year bringing daredevil thrills to the city. Watch as talented pilots perform adrenaline-spiking stunts with magnificent skyline and lakefront views as the show’s scenic backdrop.

  • When: Saturday, Aug. 10-Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024. Rehearsal is on Friday, Aug. 9, 2024. 
  • Address: Along the Chicago Lakefront, from Fullerton to Oak Street. North Avenue Beach is the focal point of the show. 
  • Cost: Free! 
  • Getting there: Public transportation is the best way to get to the Chicago Air and Water Show. The Chicago/State and Clark/Division Red Line stations are within walking distance to the lakefront. The 22, 36, 72, 145, 146 and 151 CTA buses also drop riders off near the lakefront. Plan your trip via public transit. 

The free event is extremely popular for both residents and tourists, which means it can be a challenge to beat the crowds and snag a great spot for the day. Tips for seeing the Chicago Air and Water Show with kids

  • The lakefront opens at 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Show up early to snag the best spot! If your family wants to avoid the crowds, consider watching the rehearsal on Friday, or set up just north of the show at Diversey Harbor. 
  • Ride share pick up and drop off is at the North Avenue northbound entrance to Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive. 
  • Herb Hunter’s live show and commentary can be heard from Oak Street Beach to Fullerton Beach. 
  • Food vendors along the lakefront will offer sandwiches, barbeque, Mexican food, Italian ice, ice cream and more. 
  • In addition to extra portable restrooms, the North Avenue Beach House restroom facilities will be open. 
  • A first aid station will be at the west parking lot entrance at North Avenue Beach House.
  • In case you’re separated from your child, visit the lost children tent located in the center of the LaSalle Street turnaround. 

What to bring to the Chicago Air and Water Show

  • Lawn chairs, picnic blankets or other personal seating. Public seating is not provided. 
  • A cooler filled with water, hydration drinks, snacks and picnic food. If you don’t want to bring a picnic meal, there will be food trucks and vendors along the lakefront. 
  • Ear protection, such as ear plugs or ear muffs. Low-flying aircraft can get super loud! 
  • A portable radio or mobile device to listen to the live feed of the show. Tune your devices to WBBM Newsradio 780 AM or 105.9 FM. The live show can be heard from Oak Street Beach to Fullerton Beach. 
  • Sun protection, including sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats or visors. 
  • Binoculars
