Your kids will love a forest-themed day of play at Waukegan’s Bowen Park

Discover nature-inspired playground fun, splash features and cultural history in Waukegan.

Just north of Chicago, Bowen Park offers a playful mix of imagination, nature learning and active fun for families. This hillside playground encourages kids to explore like forest animals — climbing webs, sliding through tunnels and discovering environmental learning stations along the way. With spray-play features, a fitness trail, historic attractions and arts activities nearby, Bowen Park makes it easy to fill a whole afternoon outdoors.

Play areas and park features

Bowen Park’s award-winning playground is themed “Forest Findings,” designed to resemble a woodland ecosystem where kids can roam and explore. Children can splash in the water spray area, sit on mushroom-style stools, spot animal footprints hidden throughout the play spaces and climb on a giant spider-web structure.

Two 40-foot tunnel slides stretch down the hillside for big-kid thrills, while younger children have their own safe climbing spaces nearby. A six-station fitness trail wraps around the play area. Perfect for parents or older siblings to join in on active fun. Stroller-friendly paths and shaded benches make it a comfortable stop for families of all ages.

More than a playground: Learning and arts

Bowen Park is also home to the Waukegan History Museum and the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, both located right inside the park. Families can explore local history, see rotating exhibits or take part in kids’ arts classes and performances. The combination of outdoor play and cultural experiences gives families plenty of options year-round. Seasonal programs, workshops and special events take place throughout the year, especially in warmer months. Check the Waukegan Park District website to see what’s happening during your visit.
