Celebrate the U-505 capture with free tours and new exhibit

The Museum of Science and Industry, home to the U-505 submarine, is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the German boat’s capture with the opening of a new exhibit and free tours of the sub on June 4.

The submarine, which helped advance the Allies’ position in WWII, was captured two days before D-Day. It was brought to MSI in 1954.

Along with a commemoration ceremony at 11:09 a.m., MSI will open “U-505 Submarine: 75 Stories,” a new exhibit with 75 artifacts that tell the story of the Americans and Germans through the battle that captured the boat and the early history of the submarine.

June 4 is also a free admission day for Illinois residents.

Tickets can be reserved online and the tour requires a timed ticket.
