Hey Chicagoland: Why take a Spring Break when you can take a Spring Make instead? Sure, beach time is great and all, but do your gray matter a solid and head to the Museum of Science & Industry through April 8 for creative maker joy galore.
Inventors ages 6 and up will want to start in the Make Shop to create their own name badges, using 3D printers and vinyl cutters. And what good is a name badge without illumination from an LED light— one that they’ve built, at that?
Among calendar offerings on March 24 is Hebocon, a family-friendly event (included in museum entry). Whether you’re among the lucky few creating and battling robots as part of a team or simply part of the fascinated crowd, this is a must-see. And keep an eye out for the MSI’s collection of popular robots!
Future maker in your midst? They won’t want to miss the MSI Chicago Mini Maker Faire on March 31, their chance to meet with engineers, artists and scientists in a day-long celebration of All Things Maker. (And, since they know an opportunity like this will encourage lengthy conversations throughout the day, the museum is closing at 9 p.m.)
Need a bit of a rest? Take a break to view the MSI’s latest film, “Oceans: Our Blue Planet,” in their five-story Giant Dome Theater. Narrated by Kate Winslet, Oceans takes moviegoers deeper than ever before, thanks to new technology which allows for further travels into the world’s least explored habitat. Get your timed ticket for this one (not included in museum entry)— and prepare to be wowed.
And lest you think that the fun is geared solely towards the kids, take heart! Events like the 21+ MSI After Hours: Science on Tap let the grown-ups enjoy the science behind their beloved home brews — and even get clued into the physics behind perfect beer pong strategy. (Even if you don’t win the title of “pub trivia champion,” a customized beer koozie is a pretty terrific door price.
The MSI’s Spring Make Fest has a tagline of “take a break from not making things;” sounds good to us! Get making, Chicago.
