Museum of Science and Industry to Change Name After Large Donation

The Museum of Science and Industry will change its name to the Kenneth C. Griffin Museum of Science and Industry after a $125 million donation from the Chicago-based philanthropist.

The museum announced Thursday that the gift from the investor and hedge fund manager is the largest in the museum’s 86-year history.

“Since MSI opened its doors in 1933, the Museum’s mission has been to inspire the inventive genius in everyone,” says David Mosena, president and CEO of MSI, in a letter to members. “This gift allows us to continue that work, empowering the next generation with the foundation they need to be at the forefront of STEM leadership.”

On its website, MSI says that the name change will not be immediate and could take time. The money, the museum says, will be used to help realize MSI’s plans for a “Pixel Studio,” a digital gallery and performance space designed to be one-of-a-kind in North America.
