Spookify Your Fruit with Shrunken Apple Heads

After making a trip to your favorite apple orchard, try out this spooky decoration.

Apples and pumpkins, corn mazes, football, crisp air, sweaters and trick-or-treating all share one thing. They’re the stars of a new season that doesn’t ever need a Netflix password.

It’s no wonder so many families love fall best of all. We’re not just saying it; science backs us up.

So plan that annual trip (or start a new family tradition) to the apple orchard or farm for the snaps of the kids with their giant pumpkins and bushels of apples. Then unleash your mad creative skills on that bounty to really embrace all things Spooky Season, just like mom Lauren Jeziorski, our amazing photographer and graphic designer, did with her little girl, Roxy, in the creation of these wee bit creepy, but oh so adorable, apple skulls.

How to make shrunken apple heads

  • Peel your apples, any variety works.
  • Soak in lemon juice for 20 minutes. Rotate apples to make sure each part is soaked in the juice.
  • Carve your spookiest faces, with eyes, nose and mouth. Remove the cut pieces.
  • Line baking sheet or cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  • Bake at 200 degrees for 6-8 hours.
  • Remove and cool.

NOTE: Eating the shrunken heads is not recommended. Use for decoration purposes only.
