Elegant milkshakes with trimmings galore are all the rage. Kids love to “eat” their shakes on the outside and parents can’t get enough of a shake pretty enough to post on Instagram.
Enjoy a fun at-home activity — and save a little money along the way — by making your own.
Gabrielle Draper, chef and chocolatier at Barry Callebaut, has compiled a few recommendations and recipes for families to build their own fantastic creations.
Top tips when making a crazy milkshake
- Make your shakes close to serving time (sitting too long in the freezer will turn the shake back into ice cream).
- Stock up on whipped cream, it’s the key to suspending brownies, marshmallows and more in the glass.
- Melted chocolate will help keep ingredients adhered to the rim, but if you’re looking for color, make it candy melt. To help the chocolate set up after all items are stuck to the rim, put the glass in the freezer for just a few minutes. You can also use candy melts to prepare pretzel sticks with sprinkles or other accoutrements.
- Be creative! Add or subtract elements to the recipes to play with color or add whatever your kids are crazy for.
Chocolate Hazelnut Pretzel
Ingredients
- Chocolate hazelnut ice cream with hazelnut praline swirls
- Milk
- Melting chocolate for the rim
- Hazelnut brittle crunch (like Heath Bar)
- Mini chocolate chips
- Whipped cream
- Pretzel rods
Directions
- Blend chocolate hazelnut ice cream with enough milk to make a milkshake. Near the end of blending, add some hazelnut praline in and pulse a few times to create a swirling effect. (Or you can mix it into the milkshake with a spoon.) Set aside.
- Coat the top of the glass with chocolate or coating. Before the chocolate sets, roll the top in your choice of pretzel pieces, hazelnut brittle crunch pieces or mini chocolate chips. If needed, put the glass in the freezer for a few minutes to get it to set up.
- Pour the milkshake into the glass. Top the milkshake with a dollop of whipped cream, sprinkle mini chocolate chips on top and add a few pretzel rods. Enjoy!
Milk Chocolate Salted Caramel

- Sea salt caramel truffles
- Whipped cream or salted caramel whipped cream
- Salted caramel drizzle
- Sea salt
- Milk chocolate sea salt bark
- Chocolate caramel cookies
Directions
- Blend salted caramel ice cream with some milk to make a milkshake consistency. Set aside.
- Decorate the inside of the glass with swirls of caramel sauce and milk chocolate sauce to your liking.
- Pour the milkshake into the glass and add some sea salt caramel truffles into the shake. Top the milkshake with whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce. Sprinkle on the sea salt then place pieces of milk chocolate sea salt bark and chocolate caramel cookies (or broken cookies) on top. Enjoy!
