Elevate Your Super Bowl Spread with Irresistible Chili Boards

When I say football, what food comes to mind? Chili! This NFL playoff season, whether the Monsters of the Midway are still in the hunt or not, elevate your chili game by borrowing from the charcuterie world and curating a chili board.

The secret to creating a touchdown tray? Balance! Avocados, sour cream and cilantro temper the spice; corn chips, oyster crackers and garlic croutons create texture; and sharp cheddar, jalapeños and pickled onions add zing.

Here are a few restaurants that can assist you in presenting the perfect chili board!

Fred’s Garage

Fred’s Garage in Winnetka has hosted a number of Charity Chili Cook-Offs since this former service station opened its doors in 2017 with celeb judges like Kerry Wood and Phil Vettel. Fred’s Garage has won numerous cook-off awards, no stranger to the Judge’s Choice trophy. Its recipe uses turkey as the protein base and is exactly what you think an old-fashioned chili would be — a little heat, not too spicy, hearty, meaty and the quintessential comfort food. It comes with a full lineup of classic toppings: cheddar, sour cream, scallions and oyster crackers. It even offers cold quarts to go.


Accommodating vegetarians is a cinch when sourcing your chili from Sheffield’s. It has two options available for takeout and delivery: Two Hearted Chili is a quadruple meat masterpiece with smoked brisket and pork, chorizo and bacon. Day Time Veggie Chili has a white and black bean base with a kick from Lagunitas Daytime. You can add sour cream and blue cheese on the side, and both come with cornbread. Add an order of tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole, cheddar cheese-stuffed pretzel bites and Veggie Flat Bread to round out your spread.

Honky Tonk BBQ

This family-run Pilsen staple serves its special recipe gluten-free and dairy-free Tim’s Brisket Chili. Instead of topping it with sharp cheddar or crackers, it takes the chili up a notch by adding a scoop of 5 Cheese Mac n’ Cheese for a gooey, savory slice of heaven. Place your catering order online, adding in mini corn muffins, bacon candy and Mac n’ Cheese to fill your board. If this feels a little heavy, you can add in southern greens and portobello mushrooms to introduce some veggies.

Kuma’s Corner

Known for head-banging burgers, Kuma’s Corner chili proves it isn’t just a one-trick pony. Grab a half pan of the house-made chili to serve 25 or a full pan for a crowd of 50! Add in Frizzled Onions, Elotes Mac, avocado, chipotle pepper, jalapeño and tortilla strips and the Plague Hot Sauce if you dare to create a spicy, flavorful offering. Find your closest Corner and belly up to the bar with a craft brew while waiting for takeout!
