The Chicago Botanic Garden’s Night of 1,000 Jack-o’Lanterns is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and is expecting to draw families from across the region to stroll through a trail lit by hand-carved creations.
Here are three things to know if you go:
1. 15 Nights of pumpkin magic
This year’s event has expanded from 10 to 15 nights. Night of 1,000 Jack-o’Lanterns runs Oct. 8–12, Oct. 15–19 and Oct. 22–26, with nightly hours from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. and last entry at 9:45 p.m.
The garden closes at 5 p.m. to general visitors and reopens exclusively for ticketed guests.
2. What you’ll see and do
Families can wander a paved path lined with more than 1,000 hand-carved real pumpkins, illuminated with LED lights. About 80 of the pumpkins are jumbo-sized, some weighing up to 150 pounds, with carvings ranging from Chicago sports tributes to Halloween classics.
Along the way, you’ll see live carving demonstrations, meet costumed performers and sample fall favorites like caramel apples, pumpkin mac ’n’ cheese, hot cider and seasonal cocktails. Kids (and grown-ups) are encouraged to wear costumes and share their photos on Instagram for a chance to win tickets to Lightscape.
3. Tips to make it smooth
Be sure to purchase timed-entry tickets in advance, as they often sell out quickly. Arrive during your designated window (6:30–9:45 p.m.) and plan to enjoy the full event. Wear comfortable shoes and warm layers.
