There’s no such thing as “I’m bored” on a family weekend in Walworth County. Just ask Laura Johnson, a local mom of six kids.
“We have this amazing, diverse amount of activities that make it something for pretty much every single type of family,” says Johnson, who’s also vice president of the Walworth County Visitors Bureau.
Her kids — who range in age from 8 to 20 — have tested plenty of those activities themselves. “We just had a birthday party for my 11-year-old,” she says. “We went to the Lake Geneva Tristan Crist Magic Show, and my jaw was on the floor. I couldn’t believe it wasn’t Vegas!”
From live magic and lake cruises to pick-your-own produce and drive-thru safaris, this cluster of small towns in southern Wisconsin makes it easy to explore big fun just about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Chicago. Here’s how to build your own WalCo family-friendly weekend.
Family-approved shows and tours
Be sure to snag your tickets in advance for these unexpected spectacles.
- Safari Lake Geneva (Lake Geneva): Feed free-ranging bison, giraffes and zebras from your car window. “They have a lot of amazing animals,” Johnson says. “It’s just something different that you wouldn’t think to see in Wisconsin.”
- Dancing Horses Theatre & Animal Garden (Delavan): A full stage show where horses perform choreographed routines, with a petting zoo and exotic bird show included.
- Tristan Crist Magic Theatre (Lake Geneva): Expect big illusions in a small 175-seat theater — levitating assistants, disappearing motorcycles and plenty to keep kids guessing.
- Lake Geneva Cruise Line (Lake Geneva): Boat cruises on Lake Geneva include family-friendly narrated tours and even meals. “You see these amazingly beautiful historic mansions, and you get to hear their stories,” Johnson says.
Old-school thrills with plenty to see
Between classic cars and telescope views, these stops add a little wonder to your weekend.
- Rev-Up Weekend (Delavan): Head to town July 18-20, 2025, for three days of family fun — including live music, a kid zone, a “Show Us What You Drive” parade and the Cars Time Forgot car show at Lake Lawn Resort.
- East Troy Electric Railroad (East Troy): Hop aboard a historic trolley for a scenic ride — a must for train-loving kids. (PHOTO)
- Yerkes Observatory (Williams Bay): “The floor raises up instead of the telescope coming down,” says Johnson. Summer events include music nights and stargazing parties.
Where to soak up the Wisconsin outdoors
Whether your crew prefers hiking or ziplining, there’s no shortage of fresh-air fun.
- Lake Geneva Ziplines & Adventures (Lake Geneva): “My 20-, 18- and 14-year-olds loved it,” says Johnson. “It’s just like a thrill, and then to be up so high — to see everything — that was great.” (PHOTO)
- Big Foot Beach State Park (Lake Geneva) and Natureland Park (Whitewater): Think hiking, creeks, and shady tree-covered paths. Whitewater is especially rich in trails, including segments of the Ice Age Trail. (PHOTO for Big Foot Beach)
- Lake Geneva Shore Path: Walk a portion of this scenic 26-mile loop to glimpse mansions, gardens and shoreline charm.
Top family-friendly restaurants and food stops
When it’s time to refuel, sink your teeth into the menus and fresh produce at these spots.
- Gus’s Drive-In (East Troy): Burgers, custard and Cruise Night hot rods every Saturday.
- Farm Stands: Starting mid-June, pick strawberries, sunflowers and more. “There’s quite a bit of agritourism in the summer,” she says. “Bring a cooler and take some stuff home with you.” Try Pearce’s Farm Stand in Walworth, Apple Barn Orchard & Winery in Elkhorn, or Elegant Farmer and Bower’s Produce, both in East Troy.
- Pepperoni Pub (Delavan): “Each pizza place here has its own flavor,” Johnson says. This family-owned favorite features homemade pies with Wisconsin cheese, a patio, and a self-pour beer and wine wall.
- Jessica’s Family Restaurant (Whitewater): A cozy diner with kid-friendly breakfasts like pancakes and omelets.
- Joni’s Diner (Lake Geneva): Retro 1950s-style stop for fast, friendly breakfast and lunch.
Stay the night — resort, hotel or campground
When you’re ready to unwind, try out these family-friendly options.
- Lake Lawn Resort (Delavan): Lakeside, with boat tours, pools and mini-golf. “At nighttime they have campfires,” Johnson adds, “and they provide s’mores.”
- Grand Geneva Resort (Lake Geneva): “They offer a beautiful water park, an amazing golf course and very nice restaurants,” says Johnson.
- Lodge Geneva National (Lake Geneva): Modern resort with walking trails, pools, fire pits and family-friendly dining.
- Holiday Inn Express (Elkhorn): Budget pick with a pool and free breakfast.
- Snug Lake Harbor & Scenic Ridge Campgrounds: Tent- and RV-friendly spots for a more rustic stay.
Most towns are just 5-20 minutes apart, Johnson adds — so wherever you land, you’re never far from the fun.
