Catherine Thom, Director of Park Programming for the United States Tennis Association Chicago District of the Midwest Section, says the program is designed with kids in mind.
“Because of its beginner-friendly nature, any child who wants to pursue a sport can start with Tennis 101,” she says.
Classes are split into two age groups:
- Ages 5-8 play with red balls, which are slower and bounce lower—perfect for beginners
- Ages 9-12 use orange balls that bounce a bit faster and promote more advanced skills
Each session also kicks off with a “character word of the week,” like teamwork or sportsmanship — helping kids build more than just a great backhand.
What parents need to know
- These tennis lessons Chicago parents are talking about run in six-week courses, starting June 23 at 28 park locations. Additional sessions begin Aug. 4 and Sept. 15 with play continuing into mid-October (weather permitting) at 24 park locations.
- Class times are in the afternoon and early evening, starting around 3, 4 or 5 p.m., depending on the location and time of year.
- In many cases, Tennis 101 starts immediately at the end of the park district day camp session—offering an additional hour of fun for kids and convenience for parents and caregivers.
- Cost depends on the site, but Tennis 101 is designed to be affordable and accessible to families across the city.

- A kid-sized tennis racquet (sizing info. is easy to find online)
- Water bottle and sunscreen
- Comfortable clothes and sneakers
- A good attitude and readiness to learn and play
