How Near North Montessori is empowering bold visionaries

Near North Montessori provides a hands-on, inclusive education where students grow academically, socially and emotionally while developing real-world skills and a sense of community.

At Near North Montessori, community begins in the classroom. Its three-year, multi-age environments are intentionally designed to support authentic Montessori learning — where children learn from and with one another, build independence at their own pace and develop curiosity and confidence within a consistent, nurturing community.

This continuity allows students to ask questions, take risks and grow at their own pace, all skills alumni say continue to serve them well throughout their lives.

Because the curriculum spans from age 2 through grade 8, Near North Montessori offers families a safe, consistent space for learning and growth.

A partnership between families and educators

The Near North Montessori experience is built on collaboration between educators, students and parents or caregivers. During three-year classroom cycles, educators develop deep knowledge of each child’s strengths, interests and needs, enabling truly personalized learning.

Parents can trust that their child’s progress is carefully guided, while families gain a supportive network of peers navigating similar experiences.

NNM is a rich and vibrant community that values the partnership between home and school,” says Angela G. Garcia, Head of School. “In the times we live, it is challenging to raise children and to educate them. There is no reason for either of us to do our work alone. At NNM, home and school work together to nurture and support children.”

Learning to thrive in a diverse world

Near North Montessori emphasizes diversity, equity and inclusion as core values. Students learn to understand and respect peers of all backgrounds, building empathy, cultural awareness and communication skills.

The Near North Montessori community prioritizes learning to understand and respect people of all backgrounds and beliefs, with empathy and cultural competency, which are essential skills for making meaningful connections, communicating effectively and more.

The school provides opportunities in and out of the classroom for children to consider and appreciate the diverse identities of their peers as they develop their own.

Innovating for a changing world

Building on Dr. Maria Montessori’s proven methods, Near North Montessori blends traditional Montessori education with modern, real-world experiences. Students gain confidence, independence and practical skills through hands-on learning in the STEAM Innovation Studio, Urban Farm and student-run Sandwich Shoppe.

In the STEAM Studio, students explore science, technology, engineering, arts and math through robotics, coding, 3D printing, animation and textiles. The rooftop farm and indoor hydroponics labs allow children to grow fruits, vegetables and raise livestock, learning stewardship and the full food cycle.

The farm also supplies the Sandwich Shoppe, where students manage every aspect of a farm-to-table business, from menu planning and food production to accounting and community partnerships.

Learning without limits

At Near North Montessori, learning doesn’t stop at the school’s doors. Junior High students participate in “Flex Fridays,” exploring Chicago through excursions and self-directed field trips.

Elementary students enjoy camping and canoe trips, while music education encompasses a range of activities, including classroom lessons, private lessons and ensembles. Extension classes empower students to explore new subjects, hone creative skills and gain real-world experience in a supportive setting.

Through these opportunities, students apply what they know to practical situations, developing independence, problem-solving skills and confidence. They leave the school prepared not only for the next stage of academics but also for life beyond the classroom.

From the youngest learners to eighth graders, the school cultivates curiosity, confidence and connection, making sure that each child is prepared to thrive in school and in life.
