Each winter, Lincoln Park Zoo transforms into a glowing wonderland as ZooLights Presented by Invesco QQQ and ComEd, one of Chicago’s most iconic holiday traditions, returns for the season. With light displays, festive music, seasonal snacks — and a variety of activities for all ages — ZooLights brings the holiday spirit to the heart of the city.
This year, ZooLights continues to emphasize affordability and accessibility, two values that tie directly to the zoo’s tagline of “For Wildlife. For All.” Most Monday nights offer free admission, with tickets released one week prior. Weeknight prices start at $7, and even the highest-demand tickets remain under $20, keeping the tradition inclusive.
“We want ZooLights to be something everyone can experience,” says Meg Hein, Senior Manager of Events at Lincoln Park Zoo. “Offering free nights at ZooLights is important so that as many people as possible can come out and enjoy the lights and the holiday season.”
Step into the Story of Zooltide on the South Lawn
A centerpiece of this year’s experience is Zooltide, a newly reimagined light show on the South Lawn. For the first time, the show features narration in both English and Spanish.
Accompanied by music and choreographed displays, the storytelling highlights the zoo’s conservation mission and invites guests to connect with the experience in a more meaningful way.
The display encourages guests to engage with both the visuals and the message behind the lights.
Returning favorites for the whole family
Across the zoo, families will find beloved seasonal activities that have become part of many Chicagoans’ annual traditions. Santa returns for photos through Dec. 23, while Mrs. Claus hosts weekend cookie decorating sessions, where children can get hands-on and enjoy a festive treat.
Live ice carvers transform blocks of ice into intricate sculptures on Friday and Saturday nights, and strolling carolers help guests embrace the holiday spirit through music.
For those looking to relax and recharge, the Light Lounge provides a lively outdoor space with hot cocoa, snacks, and fun glowing furniture. This covered area lets visitors take a restful break from the crowds.
Rides, attractions and special events
In addition, several ticketed attractions add to the evening experience. The Ferris Wheel offers panoramic views of the grounds, while the Endangered Species Carousel is a familiar stop along Main Mall. The Gorilla Trek VR Theater also returns with a playful, elf-themed adventure.
Throughout the season, ZooLights features several special programs designed to create different types of experiences. Sensory-Friendly Night at ZooLights brings a calmer environment with lower sound and slower or static light displays, making the event more accessible to guests who benefit from a reduced-sensory setting.
The Chris White Jazz Trio Tribute to “A Charlie Brown Christmas” returns on Dec. 7, including a matinee performance that combines the concert with early access to ZooLights.
New this year is an interactive “Elf” Movie Party on Dec. 21 in partnership with Alamo Drafthouse, designed for guests who enjoy a more playful, participatory viewing experience.
And on Dec. 2, Holiday Market: A Nowhere Market Collective Collaboration is curated with local and sustainably minded vendors to give visitors an opportunity to shop for handmade gifts.
Plan your visit
Families are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance, especially for free Monday nights, as they tend to fill quickly. Those hoping for scheduling flexibility may consider the zoo’s flexible admission pass.
With its bright displays, classic holiday traditions, and new attractions, ZooLights remains a seasonal favorite for families.
