Looking for the perfect family-friendly outdoor adventure? Then put Walworth County, Wisconsin at the top of your list. With scenic trails, beautiful parks and numerous outdoor activities, it’s a great place to hike, bike, walk or run.
We spoke with Alanna Congdon, local resident, marketing manager at Gage Marine (owners of Lake Geneva Cruise Line) and mom, to get the inside scoop on the best kid-friendly spots.
The White River Trail
The White River Trail, just outside of Lake Geneva and stretching from Elkhorn to Springfield, is a picturesque former rail corridor that’s perfect for biking and hiking. This scenic trail features numerous bridges, farmlands and wetlands.
“White River Trail is a fantastic spot for families, with beautiful views and a relaxing atmosphere,” says Congdon.
Tip: While on the trail, stop by Pedal and Cup, a renovated retro train depot, to rent bikes, grab some ice cream and sip a gourmet coffee.
Grand Geneva Resort, Lake Geneva
For those seeking a bit more excitement, the Grand Geneva Resort’s Mountain Biking Trails & Adventure Center offers 3.5 miles of thrilling trails.
The resort also provides bike rentals and other activities like archery, disc golf and sand volleyball.
Tip: Hiking costs $5 per person, and mountain biking is $10 per person. Helmets are required.
Big Foot Beach State Park, Lake Geneva
Big Foot Beach State Park features five miles of hiking trails, picnic areas and a playground.
With its location right near downtown Lake Geneva, there are plenty of spots to grab a snack or a bite, or even do a little shopping before or after your Big Foot playtime.
Tip: “A State Park sticker is required for entry, which can be purchased online or on site,” says Congdon.
Geneva Lake Shore Path, Lake Geneva
Don’t miss this iconic path with stunning lake views and historic mansions, many dating back 100 years or more. While the walk is leisurely, note that the path is 26 miles long. However, there are many shorter sections to explore.
For example, starting near Edgewater Park in Williams Bay, you can walk to one local restaurant favorite, Pier 290, for a lunch break or venture a little further to the world-famous Yerkes Observatory.
“This path is best for older kids, who can appreciate the scenery and history,” says Congdon.
To enhance your walk, she suggests picking up the $8 booklet (widely available in town) with details about the path and its historical homes.
Tip: You can hitch a ride back from your hike on Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s Full Lake Cruise, Monday through Friday, by stopping at Williams Bay Municipal Pier 45 minutes after the Full Lake Cruise leaves Lake Geneva.
Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy, Williams Bay
With over four miles of trails filled with diverse plants, the conservancy hosts 36 different bird species, including the turkey vulture plus other Midwestern wildlife.
Tip: “Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy hosts events that cater to kids of all ages, ensuring a fun and educational experience,” says Congdon.
Kettle Moraine State Forest, Whitewater
The Kettle Moraine State Forest offers a variety of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Popular trails include the John Muir and Nordic Trail Systems, which feature different loop lengths suitable for all skill levels.
Congdon adds, “There are even designated spots for kids and beginners to practice their mountain biking skills before heading out on a trail.” She suggests choosing a shorter loop for a manageable but rewarding bike or hike with younger kids.
Tip: Kettle Moraine is located just a few miles from downtown Whitewater, so if you’re staying in the area, check out some of the great local dining options.
Walworth County Parks
Walworth County boasts several beautiful parks, each offering unique experiences for families.
“Our county parks provide beautiful nature trails and great picnic areas, perfect for a family day out,” Congdon says. Here are a few highlights:
Natureland Park, Whitewater
This park features nature trails with stunning views of Whitewater Lake, a spring-fed pond and pine forestry all along the hiking trails.
Tip: “This one is great for young kids,” says Congdon. “It’s peaceful and there’s plenty of nature to enjoy, like frogs jumping in the ponds, plus lots of other small wildlife.”
Price Park, Elkhorn
Price Park includes nature trails and picnic areas, perfect for young kids.
Tip: “Bring the family dog with you – there’s a dog park here!” says Congdon.
White River County Park, Lake Geneva
White River County Park is the largest park in Walworth County, spanning nearly 200 acres with two miles of White River frontage.
The park features three scenic nature trails and plenty of picnic spots. “This is a great trail for biking,” says Congdon.
Tip: The park is on the White River Trail, so if you’re biking or hiking, this is a good place to take a break.
Don’t miss Delavan’s parks
“The city of Delavan has lots of parks that are perfect for younger kids,” says Congdon. “Congdon Park is a family favorite, and not just because it’s our last name,” she jokes.
Congdon Gardens is a 29.6-acre park that serves as the eastern gateway to the city of Delavan. Take the kids for some peaceful shoreline fishing. Or, check out the natural resources area with trails and benches for recreational walking.
Tip: “My kids love the pond and the rotary garden filled with beautiful flowers. This park is a wonderful place to explore and relax,” Congdon says.
