5 Must-Go Winter Events for Kids at Chicago Public Library

In February 2025, don’t miss these top fun events for kids of all ages, from science, painting and gaming to design career exploration and even a crafty Mardi Gras party!

When Illinois’ bitter February winds blow, families are itching to kick cabin fever. Luckily, the Chicago Public Library has plenty of clubs, crafts and creativity to help you out!

With 81 branches across the city hosting dozens of free events, there’s something for kids of all ages and interests. But what should you absolutely not miss? To find out, we checked in with:

    • Julie Koslowsky, the CPL Director of Teen Services, and
    • Shelley Hughes, the CPL Director of Children’s Services and Family Engagement

 

They highlighted five standout programs sure to spark your family’s curiosity.

Science Club at Blackstone

Science learning is a blast at this Med-ucate event. Elementary schoolers ages 6-13 join in a variety of fun science learning sessions and activities led by pre-med students at the University of Chicago. This ongoing series has five events throughout the winter months.

Paint Pouring Techniques at Legler

Fluid art — formally known as acrylic paint pouring — is the focus of this teen workshop. Fun and expressive, this method lets kids pour, tilt and blend colorful paints. The result is stunning and unpredictable abstract designs they’ll be excited to show off. From paints to canvases, all materials are provided. Dress to get a little messy!

Design Your Life: College and Career Saturday at Toman

  • Ages: 13-19

  • Note: Advance registration is encouraged

Calling all aspiring singers, actors and dancers! At this hands-on event, teens ages 13-19 can explore performing arts and media production careers with actual professionals.

This fair includes the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, Chicago State University’s Art & Design program and more. Plus, win prizes and even get a free lunch.

Gamer’s Universe Showdown Series at Harold Washington

  • When: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025

  • Where: Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State St., Chicago

As the CPL’s teen interns get experience organizing a gaming tournament, attendees enjoy a variety of free-play stations competitive and noncompetitive games — like Mario Kart 8, Fighting Game and Splatoon 3. No registration needed.

It all leads up to the Gamer’s Universe gaming convention on June 14, 2025.

Mardi Gras Family Craft Night at Beverly

With Mardi Gras right around the corner — on March 4, 2025, to be exact — join in the Beverly Hills’ neighborhood’s Countdown to Mardi Gras celebration. Kiddos ages 5 and up (and their caregivers) are welcome to make their own tambourines, masks and more.
