Best Chicago Libraries for Kids
1. Little Italy Branch
- Address: 1336 W. Taylor St., Chicago (Near West Side)
Soaring open spaces, vibrant graphics and fun activities are hallmarks of this modern library, which opened in 2019 but has roots tracing back to 1891.
The children’s area features a wilderness scene, where kids can create their own critters from cut-out felt pieces. A dedicated area also supports early literacy through play.
You’ll also find plenty of events in the community room, from crafting and film screenings to educational activities for kids from tykes to tweens.
2. Thomas Hughes Children’s Library
- Address: 400 S. State St., Chicago (South Loop)
Perched on the second floor of the iconic Harold Washington Library Center, this dedicated children’s library combines a STEAM focus with classic library charm.
Explore three dedicated “neighborhoods,” each dedicated to specific ages — birth to five, elementary school kids and tweens.
Little ones can enjoy the puppet stage and story nook, while tweens dive into a digital media space with laptops, cameras and virtual reality tools. A teacher is on hand during the school year for homework help.
High schoolers will love YOUmedia, a teen-only maker space with gaming, 3D printers, a production studio and more digital creative fun.
3. Bucktown-Wicker Park Branch
- Address: 1701 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago (North Side)
Connect with your community at play days, story times and more — where kids socialize with other tots while playing with blocks, puzzles and other engaging learning toys.
Since its upper level is for quiet reading and studying only, that means the first floor is a space where kids can laugh, explore and make a little noise without worry.
For older kids, explore the crafting workshops, iPhone photography classes and social hangouts with snacks in the teen room.
4. Chinatown Branch
- Address: 2100 S. Wentworth Ave., Chicago (South Side)
Soft, natural light is plentiful at this striking library, which is wrapped by a “glass curtain” wall. Inside, you’ll find events like Story Time Art or LEGO in the Library — not to mention a children’s play area and programming for all ages.
Its YOUmedia center rents laptops, video games and other digital resources to teens, too. Whether you’re reading or roaming, be sure to take in the expansive city views. It’s also directly across from visit-worthy Chinatown restaurants, shopping and transit.
