Academic enrichment programs can play an important role in helping students explore interests, deepen skills, and stay engaged in learning — especially when those opportunities extend beyond what’s available in a traditional school setting.
The most effective enrichment programs offer flexibility, meaningful challenge, and experiences that grow with a child over time.
At Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development (CTD), enrichment opportunities are intentionally designed to meet students at different ages, stages and interests, with programs available year-round and across multiple formats.

Throughout the school year, CTD offers weekend courses during the fall, winter and spring for students local to the Chicagoland area. In-person classes take place on Northwestern’s Evanston campus and at locations throughout Chicago, with both morning and afternoon options to fit family schedules.
Weekend courses typically run for six weeks (with winter beginning in late January), while online courses follow similar seasonal cycles with varied start dates and durations depending on age and subject.
For families looking ahead, CTD’s summer programs are a hallmark offering. Younger students, from preK through Grade 5, can participate in one-week, commuter-based camps focused on a single topic from June through July.
For students in Grades 6-12, summer programs may span one to three weeks and include the option to live on Northwestern’s Evanston campus, providing a college-like experience alongside rigorous academic coursework.
“These students do have the option to come and live on campus for a period of time over the summer, so there’s a powerful learning experience available,” says Melissa Hinshaw, who leads Assessment and School Services for CTD.
“Their experience on campus also includes embedded, deliberate socialization with other students, field trips to areas around the Chicagoland area and scheduled downtime so that kids can learn to detach, relax and enjoy their time while they’re on campus.”
CTD’s course offerings evolve each year. While perennial favorites like biomedical science return regularly, new courses are continually developed based on student interest, family feedback, and instructor expertise. Topics span STEM, humanities, creative fields and leadership, ensuring students can find programs aligned with their passions.
Importantly, CTD emphasizes early exposure. For students in preK through second grade, no eligibility is required — families can simply register and explore advanced learning together. Beginning in third grade, eligibility is used to ensure students are ready for advanced coursework, with clear guidance provided on each course page.
With in-person, online, commuter, and residential options — and students joining from across the country and around the world — CTD offers a flexible, enriching pathway that helps students explore interests, build confidence, and grow into motivated, well-rounded learners.
