7 ways families can enjoy Make Music Chicago

Looking for free things to do with your kids? You’re in luck! Make Music Chicago is back on Friday, June 21, in a free citywide event celebrating musicians with performances, activities and more. Your family can join in the on the fun by attending one of these kid-approved events happening throughout the day. 

Learn-A-Tune on Piano

When: 11 a.m.-noon

Where: Meyering Park, 7140 S. Martin Luther King Dr., Chicago

Stop by Meyering Park to get a free introductory lesson on the piano. If you love playing the piano, don’t miss Piano in the Parks, where you can play the piano outdoors until Aug. 1. 

Puppets Props and Plungers

When: Various times

Where: Various locations

You have three chances to see this talented puppeteer engage with an audience through music and props. Here’s where you can catch a performance:

  • International House, 1414 E. 59th St., Chicago (1:30-2:15 p.m.)
  • Nichols Park, 1355 E. 53rd St., Chicago (3-4 p.m.)
  • Maggie Daley Park, 337 E. Randolph St., Chicago (5:30-6:30 p.m.)

The Lucky Trikes

When: 3:15-4:30 p.m.

Where: Independence Branch, Chicago Public Library, 4024 N. Elston Ave., Chicago

This local band makes storytelling fun for all ages! Each performance is organized by a certain theme so you can always expect something new from The Lucky Trikes. 

Guitar Lessons

When: 5-7:30 p.m.

Where: Chicago Riverwalk, The Jetty (between Franklin & Wells)

If any of your kids are itching to learn guitar, take them to the Chicago Riverwalk to learn firsthand about the instrument from Columbia College Chicago students. 

Chicago Suzuki Violin Playdown

When: 5:30-6 p.m.

Where: Jay Pritzker Pavilion, 201 E. Randolph St., Chicago

Plan a picnic at Millennium Park while you listen to current and former Suzuki students play a beautiful violin performance. 

Drumming in McKinley Park

When: 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Where: McKinley Park, 2210 W. Pershing Road, Chicago

Spend a night out in the parks as you watch Grammy-winning percussionist Matthew Duvall perform in an interactive concert. Don’t forget to explore the park and find multiple sound stations open for anyone to play. 

Kazoo Workshop

When: 5-7:30 p.m.

Where: Chicago Riverwalk, Water Plaza (between Wells & LaSalle)

Old Town School of Folk Music leads a workshop all about the musical instrument and, better yet, the school is also donating 100 free kazoos. (Fair warning for parents: your kids might go a little kazoo crazy after bringing one home.)
