Date night ideas perfect for the entire family

Date nights are not just for parents; kids enjoy mini adventures and painting the town red just as much. Here are a few suggests for easy, fun activities for the whole family.

Neighborhood walks

Take the time to really get to know your neighborhood. Walk around and notice the architecture and the landscaping, maybe even meet a new friend or two! Once you get tired of your own neighborhood, choose a different one to visit. This can easily turn into an all-day outing with new restaurants and businesses to discover along the way.

Beach/forest preserve

Early evening hikes and picnics are a wonderfully rewarding way to disconnect from the world and reconnect as a family. Having an open-ended agenda is the key for evenings in nature. Give each family member an opportunity to do something they want to do. If you live close to one of the Illinois beaches, being near the water brings a peaceful close to the day.

Water Taxi and Chicago Riverwalk

For a easy and inexpensive adventure in downtown Chicago, take the Chicago Water Taxi from one of several locations in Chicago all the way to the Riverwalk. Have dinner or ice cream (or both). An All-Day Pass for the Water Taxi is $9 per person. You get all the fun views of the city and can make an adventure out of almost any stop along the way. Check the taxi schedule ahead of time to make sure it works for you.

Game night

You can spend an evening teaching your kids about winning graciously and how not to be a sore loser by having a fun-filled game night. You can DIY by searching Pinterest for ideas or use all those games stored in the closet. For another twist, take game night out. Local stores, such as Cat and Mouse in the West Loop, offer a great opportunity to try out classic and new board games. For a more nostalgic feel, take the family to the arcade. Nickel City Games in Northbrook houses classic arcade and carnival games. This is also a great way to meet other game-loving families or invite your friends out for an evening.

Concerts and movies in the park

Concerts and movies in your local park can make a family date night epic. Pack a picnic dinner while you enjoy fresh air and free entertainment. Ravinia will give the best star studded lineup. Meanwhile, most area park districts offer evening concerts or movies so that you can introduce your kids to your favorite artist or childhood movie.

Memory lane

If your kiddos are bit older, take them down memory lane. Take them on a your favorite pre-kid date night or visit favorite spots or as a family. Reminisce and tell the kids about the days before you were Mom or Dad (PG versions, of course!) They will likely get a kick out of hearing about the days when you were cool or that one super embarrassing moment you’d like to forget.

No matter what you choose to do with your family, have fun! The best part of Family Date night is being together.
