What Can Your Child Learn at Latin School of Chicago This Summer?

Summer is the time for kids to pursue their passions, try new things, have fun and learn something they might not learn during the school year. At Summer@Latin, students engage in programs that encourage friendship, fun and immersive learning through hands-on activities.

Kids don’t have to be students at Latin to participate in summer programming, and there are fun things to do for preschoolers through teenagers. Get to know all that Summer@Latin has to offer.

Gain confidence and learn something, too

Summer@Latin camps and classes are not only fun, they can even be life changing. Campers and students gain confidence and learn skills that help them develop into brave leaders.

At the Science@Home virtual summer camp last summer, students followed the steps of the scientific method — including posing a question, conducting research, creating a hypothesis, noting observations and drawing a conclusion — to conduct an experiment on their own.

Through the process, the students learned relevant problem-solving skills. All students worked individually or with a partner to enter an online science fair. The theme of the fair was “Healthy Habits,” and this framework challenged students to conduct experiments that would keep people healthy during quarantine from COVID-19.

Summer@Latin participant Beth Rosenow, a seventh grade student at Latin School of Chicago, was a runner up in the nationwide contest. Her experiment was called “Jumping Jacks with Beth” in which she tested the ability of a person to do jumping jacks while wearing a mask.

The experiment consisted of individuals doing jumping jacks for one minute — first wearing a mask and then again without a mask — and counting the number of jumping jacks they were able to complete. She found that participants could do considerably fewer jumping jacks while wearing their masks.

Something for everyone

Science@Home — along with other classes at Summer@Latin — provide students with extraordinary learning opportunities and memorable experiences that allow them to try something new and find success all while having fun. Latin offers a diverse selection of in-person and virtual opportunities for subject review, new learning and summer fun.
