Black Girl Magic: 2 Brands to Know and the Women Behind Them

Princess Cupcake Jones book series

Cupcake Jones is a curly-haired modern-day princess with a lot of heart and a bit of sass. After finding a lack of children’s books featuring African-American main characters when her daughter was a child, author Ylleya Fields created the Princess Cupcake Jones series, which currently includes four titles.

The rhythmic text and fun, bright illustrations will draw in every kid immediately, and parents will appreciate the relatable real-world situations Cupcake finds herself in (feeling nervous before the first day of school, for example), but it is little girls of color, especially, who will fall in love with this character. She’s smart, lovable, kind, hardworking and most importantly, looks just like them.

Fun fact: Illustrator Michael LaDuca has hidden the word ‘love’ on each page of every book. Can you find them all?

Kids haircare by Mixed Chicks

This kids version by the same makers of the well-loved hair care line features shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner and tangle-tamer. Made especially for curly, textured hair, Mixed Chicks is the go-to brand parents turn to tame hard-to-manage locks.

Friends Wendy Levi and Kim Etheredge are “mixed chicks” themselves and were looking for solutions to embrace their naturally curly hair when they created Mixed Chicks.

Fun fact: Mixed Chick rock dolls are available for purchase online. The four dolls feature different complexions and hair types so it’s easy for your own rock girl to find the one that looks most like them.
