Oh, boy

When deciding whether or not to circumcise their baby boy, many parents think about what is considered “normal.” As it turns out, “normal” is different depending on where you live. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the nationwide average is 56 percent of newborn boys, a number that has remained about the same for the past decade. Here’s the geographical breakdown from 2005:

75 percent of newborn boys in the Midwest were circumcised.

 65 percent in the Northeast were circumcised. 56 percent in the South were circumcised. 31 percent in the West were circumcised.
