More drop-side cribs recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled two more brands of drop-side cribs, adding to the more than 5 million cribs already recalled this year. An 8-month-old child in Houston died after becoming entrapped and suffocated in a Simplicity drop-side crib. Several children also became entrapped when attachments from the drop-side broke or detached.

LaJobi drop-side cribs were also recalled after 33 reports of drop-side detachment. When the drop-side detaches, it creates a gap between the drop-side and the crib mattress in which infants and toddlers can become entrapped and suffocate or fall.

If your child is using these or any other recalled drop-side crib, CPSC urges parents to stop using the crib immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment. LaJobi will send technicians to the home to repair the hardware; contact them at (866) 688-9009. Simplicity cribs should be immediately returned to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement.

Play yards also can pose a hazard to young children. More than one million Kolcraft play yards were recalled last month because the side rail can fail to latch properly. Kolcraft has received 347 reports of the sides of the play yards collapsing unexpectedly-21 children have been injured. This recall involves the Kolcraft Travelin’ Tot play yards, as well as other similar play yards manufactured for Carter’s, Sesame Street, Jeep, Countours, Care Bears and Eric Carle. Some of the units have a bassinet and/or changing table. For more information, called Kolcraft at (866) 594-4209 or visit its Web site at www.kolcraft.com.

The CPSC also recalled about 4 million inflatable baby floats after numerous children fell into the water when the leg slots tore. The baby floats, manufactured by Aqua-Leisure Industries, were sold in a variety of styles and colors at stores nationwide. For additional information, contact Aqua-Leisure at (866) 807-3998 or www.aqua
