This report highlights the top communities in Cook County for families, focusing on diversity.

The rankings are based on a variety of factors, including ethnic and economic diversity data sourced from the U.S. Census. Discover which areas in Cook County offer the most diverse and inclusive environments for families. Learn more about the full methodology used here.

1. Chicago

  • Population: 2,721,914

Chicago, the most populous city in Illinois, is home to a bustling epicenter of different cultures and communities. Chicago also ranks tenth on the most diverse cities in America list from Niche. 

2. Alsip

  • Average home value: $198,600
  • Population: 18,866

This dense, suburban city boasts good parks and recreation options for the whole family and offers above average public schools. 

3. Chicago Heights

  • Average home value: $134,600
  • Population: 27,366

Chicago Heights has four sister cities based in Ghana, Mexico, Poland and Italy. Sister Cities are an agreement between two cities to promote and exchange culture, and Chicago Heights has thrown festivals celebrating its sister cities. 

4. South Chicago Heights 

  • Average home value: $121,500
  • Population: 3,986

This smaller suburb of Chicago packs a diverse set of local cultures between its borders. It scores a “B+” from Niche in the outdoor activities, cost of living and commuting categories, too. 

5. Lansing

Many young professionals call Lansing home. This suburb offers a dense suburban feel and most residents own their own homes.

6. Midlothian
