Lincoln Park Zoo welcomes second baby gorilla

It looks like Lincoln Park Zoo is having a mini baby boom! For the second time in one month, the zoo has welcomed a newborn baby gorilla.

The newest addition joined the western lowland gorilla troop on June 12 with Bana, 24, giving birth to the infant. Exactly one month ago, another gorilla at the zoo, Rollie, gave birth to a male baby gorilla on May 12.

“As with any birth, we are cautiously optimistic about the latest arrival. Bana is an experienced mother who is displaying appropriate maternal skills and care,” said Curator of Primates Jill Moyse in a release from the zoo.

Regenstein Center for African Apes is closed until Sunday, June 16. After that, the building will be open to visitors, although you might not be able to see the family right away (but keep an eye out for them at their outdoor habitat).

Here are some photos from last month’s birth announcement with Rollie and her son.

“Having two offspring born close together provides such an exciting time for guests and gorillas alike,” said Moyse. “The infants will have the opportunity to grow, develop, and explore their surroundings together and learn from one another.”
