Paint Your Own Alebrije

Kids ages 5-12 are invited to learn under artist and Indigenous activist Carlos Orozco to virtually to paint their own hand-carved alebrije. Every year, Orozco travels to Chicago to host workshops where students learn to paint their own animal or mystical being alebrije in traditional Oaxacan style while also learning about Oaxacan culture, the sustainability practices of Indigenous peoples, and the beautiful artistic traditions of Mexico's Isthmus region. To paint from home this year, each student will receive a hand-carved small or medium alebrije to use during this virtual class. Attendees can opt to pick up their alebrije or pay shipping fee to have it delivered to their home (paint can also be ordered). All proceeds go directly to the Oaxacan families impacted by coronavirus and recent natural disasters.
