The New Year brings with it a fresh start and for parents, it can bring an opportunity to reflect on how their kids spend a big part of their day, in school, and ways to help set their child up to thrive the rest of the school year.
We are lucky to live in a bustling, resource-rich environment. From excellent local libraries to world-class museums, our community resources here in Chicagoland are invaluable when it comes to raising our kids to be the thoughtful, wise community leaders we want them to be. Here are nine education-focused New Year’s resolutions to add to your annual resolution-making that definitely won’t end up as “fails.”
Resolution 1
Use Chicago’s rich cultural heritage.
From the Field Museum to the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago is a city with a deep cultural heritage. Resolve to explore a new museum or cultural site each month.
Resolution 2
Encourage more reading.
Chicago’s library system is among the nation’s best. Resolve to visit different branches and participate in their children’s programs. Regular library visits can ignite a lifelong love of reading and learning. Don’t forget about your own local library, too.
Resolution 3
Leverage technology wisely.
In today’s digital age, educational apps and online resources can be a game changer. Use these tools to supplement your child’s learning, but remember, balance is key. Set limits to ensure a healthy digital diet.
Resolution 4
Incorporate math into everyday activities.
Math doesn’t have to be boring. Involve your child in cooking or shopping to teach them practical math skills. The Museum of Science and Industry offers interactive exhibits that make math fun and engaging, so plan a visit.
Resolution 5
Use parks and forest preserves for learning.
Parks and nature centers are perfect for hands-on learning. Plan trips to Lincoln Park Zoo to learn about nature and science in an interactive environment.
Resolution 6
Foster creativity with art.
The Art Institute of Chicago and numerous local galleries provide a great backdrop for inspiring creativity. Encourage your child to create their own art and explore various mediums.
Resolution 7
Teach community involvement.
Help your child understand the importance of community and empathy. Get involved in local events or volunteer as a family. This teaches children about social responsibility and civic engagement.
Resolution 8
Focus on physical and mental well-being.
Healthy bodies foster healthy minds. Ensure your child is active, eats healthily and gets enough sleep. Your local park district offers sports and wellness programs for kids to try for affordable prices.
Resolution 9
Create an effective study environment at home.
Having a quiet, organized space for homework can make a big difference. Also stay in touch with your child’s teachers and school activities. A healthy amount of parental involvement is key to educational success.
