Learn to strut your stuff at adult dance classes

Are your date nights stuck in a rut? Do you find yourself in the familiar pattern of dinner and a movie? Are you feeling just a bit past the bar scene? And do you need something to talk about other than the kids’ social lives? Then why not check out an adult dance class?

It doesn’t matter whether you used to twirl in a tutu in your formative years or you’ve got two left feet; if you can walk, you can dance! And partner dancing is a wonderful way of reconnecting with your partner by having a conversation without saying a word.

There are plenty of studios throughout Chicago where you can learn to strut your stuff. And don’t worry if you can’t convince your partner to join you — you can attend most without needing a partner. You’ll be dancing the night away in no time!

Tango 21

This isn’t the rose-between-the-teeth power play seen on Dancing with the Stars. This is real deal Argentine tango that will teach you about the authentic culture and music that accompanies this sensual dance style. There are classes for every level of ability, and the beginner’s classes start with simply learning how to walk! Once you’ve learned the basics, you can join one of the many Milonga (social dances) that take place throughout the Chicago area. Classes run throughout the year – join at any time.

Old Town School of Folk Music

Perhaps you’re already a regular visitor to the Lincoln Square or Armitage locations of this school, but you may not know that once all the sillies have been shaken out and the wheels on the bus have stopped turning, the adults come out to play. Check out their Ballroom for Barrooms class where you’ll learn a range of partner dances that will have you the envy of the room whenever you encounter a live band. The next session begins July 2.

Arthur Murray

This studio has branches in and around Chicago where you can learn ballroom, Latin, swing and social partnership dancing. Their basic program will teach you foundational skills to give you confidence on the dance floor. And if you find your inner Fred Astaire, they have programs to take you all the way to competition level!

If you need a little inspiration before you take to the dance floor, but don’t want to spend Broadway prices on your date night, there are plenty of professional shows being staged in Chicago’s wonderful independent theaters. Here are a few to check out in the next few weeks:

El Tango Café – June 22, 23, 24

Tango 21 Dance Theater (the partner company to the dance school where many of its dancers began their tango journey) is bringing its show to The Edge Theater in the Edgewater neighborhood for three nights only. Inspired by events at the real life Ritz Tango Café, you’ll learn about tango’s transformative powers and the music and culture surrounding the dance form.

Ensemble Español – Every Tuesday and Thursday

You don’t even have to go to a theater to see this group perform. Combine dinner and a dance show at 90 Miles Cuban Café every Tuesday (Logan Square) and Thursday (Lincolnwood). Delicious Cuban food and Latin beats that will have your toes tapping. What more could you ask for?

JUBA! – July 20, 21

This may not be partner dancing, but this celebration of tap and percussive dance might inspire you to channel Mumble (remember “Happy Feet”?) and try a tap class at Chicago Human Rhythm Project yourself. Billed as “an evening packed with extraordinary foot drummers and percussive arts masters from around the globe,” you’ll be blown away by these masters of dance.
