Events all about kites in Chicago and the suburbs

It’s finally springtime in Chicago, so why not put all that wind to some good use? Park districts all around Chicagoland are hosting family kite-flying events. Some are BYOK (that’s bring your own kite), but others have kite-making demos and kites available on site. So pack a picnic, a good windbreaker and off you go!

Put all that wind we’ve got to some good use at one of these family kite-flying events around Chicagoland this spring and summer.


Annual Family-Style Kite Fly

Bring and fly your own kite or make and fly one at the park.Kite supplies provided. Light concessions available.


Chicago Botanic Garden’s Kite Festival

In the meadow west of Evening Island, enjoy soaring stunt-kite performances set to music by members of the Chicago Fire Kite Team and members of the Kite Society of Wisconsin & Illinois. These high-flying professionals demonstrate awesome feats of beauty and great skill. Ice cream, beverages, and many lunch options will be available for purchase on the west meadow.


JustPlay! Sports & Rec Festival

Dozens of free activities to thousands of participants. All designed to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to get active, have fun and try new things.


Family Adventure Day

Get down and dirty with nature at the kick-off event for LeaveNo Child Inside Month! Build a fort, roast a marshmallow, fly akite, go fish, hike a trail and more! This is a day of outdoor funtargeted primarily toward families with young children.



Naperville Park District Frontier Park Kite Festival

Enjoy gigantic kites, exciting demonstrations, stunts and hands-on activities. Plus live music, games and giveaways, and live performances.

 


Chicago Kids & Kites Festival

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events provides free kits for kids to design and create their own kite. There will also be crafts and face painting. Weather permitting,  the festival will also include the Big Kite Candy Drop, a piñata-like kite filled with candies that drop from the sky.


Go Fly a Kite

Guests can take part in a grand launch, watch demonstrations by the Chicago Fire Kite Team, compete in the Highest Flying Kite and Most Unique Kite contests, gather treats during the Kids Candy Drop, and shop new kites from vendors.


Flying 4 Kids

Park districts all over Illinois raise awareness for the ParkDistrict Youth License Plate program through kite flying. Enjoy aday of good old fashioned kite flying and picnic. Bring yourfavorite kite or come ready to build one on site with one of thekite making kits. Preregistration is recommended.


The kite fun comes inside and on stage at this show, from BlairThomas & Company, which combines theatre and puppetry.
