Hot date night idea for Chicago couples

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a date night with my husband is usually dinner. Maybe a movie. Starbucks afterwards if I’m lucky. Or, let’s be honest – the fact that there even was a date night should have me jumping for joy! For 2014, in an effort to maintain our marriage mojo, my husband and I vowed to go on one date night a month. Every month. For a whole year. That’s a whole lot of dinners and probably too many movies!

Recently though, I was given a real treat. To prevent “date night boredom,” my husband and I attended Date Night at Ignite Glass Studios for an unconventional night of fun. For a limited time only, Ignite will open their hot shop after-hours for a special glass blowing experience for two. Couples will be able to create their own glass heart – a design of their own choosing! I wasn’t sure what to expect at first (just glad to be headed somewhere other than a movie theater), but my mind was open and I was excited to try something new.

When we first arrived at the Ignite Glass Studio I was initially captivated by the colorful glass designs in their retail shop. Everything from paperweights and vases to penguins and snowmen (adorable, by the way) adorn the shelves of this elegant space. Then it was off to the hot shop in back to create our masterpiece!

My husband and I worked with Pearl Dick, an amazing instructor with over 16 years of glass blowing experience, to create our heart. She showed us the ropes – heating the glass, adding color to the glass, then shaping the glass – using tools of the trade. The entire process only took about 20 minutes.

The rest of the class time can be spent sipping on complimentary champagne and snacking on chocolates while mingling with other couples. Glass pieces need to cool for a 24 hour period so plan on returning to the shop, or having your custom-made piece shipped to your home.

There's still time to sign up for a Date Night on February 12 from 6 - 9 p.m.

Reservations are required and can be made at (312) 465-2389. You can also register for additional classes – like the Discover Glass class. I had so much fun at Ignite Glass that I’m seriously considering making a return visit!
